gatherings and kids

From: swiftfan1 (swiftfan1@yahoo.com) | Date: 2005-02-17 03:43:16 UTC

Looking with anticipation at the growing number of spring gatherings,
but wondering what it would be like if we brought a few choice wee
Travelin'Moores. Would love to hear tips, true tales, and
trepidations about small children at gatherings from all who care to
comment.

Thanks,

My kids and I are inseparable when it comes to gatherings (sort of
comes with the territory given our current 'parenting' situation).
If I'm planning an event, I make a great effort to find locales that
provide a covered 'meeting' facility (like a picnic pavillion)
adjacent a nice playground for the kids. This seems to work well
for events. Otherwise, we've attended letterboxing gatherings
planned by others at all sorts of venues from parks, campgrounds,
shopping malls, private homes, restaurants to pubs and the kids have
had a great time at every single event! Since we started
letterboxing, my kids have ranged from 8 months to current 6+ years
old. They often ask/beg to attend future events--they've had that
much fun--even hiking long distances!!!

A funny story would be about the 2-3 day long Battleground Lake
Stamp Camp we attended near Vancouver, WA in Aug 04. We capped
Saturday's events with a grand 'bonfire' for the group at one of the
campsites--my kids (then 2-1/2 and 5-1/2) were so exhausted after
the incredible day they experienced that they both fell asleep atop
my Camelback backpack directly on the dirt/gravel ground and didn't
budge an inch the entire bonfire!!! The resulting photographs were
hilarious!!!

RE: [LbNA] gatherings and kids

Kids are great at gatherings. Gatherings we have been at have included
children right in the thick of things, but have also had sideline activities
for them too (like a stamp your own vegetable garden table).

If your kids have their own signature stamps, they will quickly find
themselves very popular as everyone clamors to get their stamps. This is
such a huge boost to those little egos, even for rather shy ones. We have
found that kids enjoy it because they find that one letterboxer is
considered the same as any other letterboxer no matter what the age. It's
really nice.

Cheers!

I agree that kids absolutely love the feeding frenzy of stamp
exchanges. If there are other kids present, they will find one
another for extracurricular activities that are usually very benign!

This makes me very happy to hear....my kids both have their own signature stamp....my son carved his himself....we are anxiously anticipating the upcoming Great Lakes gathering and this will just be one more exciting time that they will have since we've started letterboxing!

As one of the organizers for the upcoming Gold Rush Romp in Old
Sacramento I think I speak for all that kids and pets are very
welcome to attend. After all this is a family sport. I've invited my
friends kids who love to go boxing with me.
